The first model was me thinking about a way that I could represent nutrition in a ready meal. By using a box that reminded me of a ready meal box with the lipped edge and the square shape. I used cotton pads that were circular as when I think about sugar and salt grains I think of them as a rounded drain rather than sharp. Another way I thought of the circular shapes was also as traffic lights. The traffic light nutrition system is a compulsory visual guide set out by the government for food items to make it easier for customers to know how much fat, sugar and salt is in the food they are buying. However, these aren't currently a requirement for toddlers ready meals. I could potentially make a piece responding to this.

The second piece was me using leftover foam pieces to make a unicorn like shape. On children's food packaging there are lots of characters and shapes with eyes on to make the product more appealing to children and parents. By making a simple foam model of a popular animal I thought if this was also a potential route that I could go down and whether making simple animal and creature like shapes could be a way of commenting on the use of characters to make children's meals that are high in sugar and salt to look more 'innocent.'

This model was inspired by a ping pong table art installation by Carlos No. Instead of following the theme of his piece which was segregation I changed the narrative to healthy eating in children where the ball going across the table represented salt in a meal. By having multiple balls bounce across the table I wanted to show the movement of the salt. I could've improved this model further by thinking about a potential model of a ping pong bat to show how movement or exercise can help balance out the salt intake. Although I liked the table and the zigzag table 'legs' I didn't like the message of the piece as I want to focus on children's ready meals and the high levels of sugar and salt in them rather than exercise. I also found the model confusing.

I used material and plastic packaging to create a model and I really liked the how the light reflected off of the packaging and reminded me of the plastic film on the packing of ready meals that you have to pierce to heat it up in the microwave. I also liked how this fabric shape was representing the meal and almost trapped in it. This model was inspired by the glass piece that I made when sand casting where I used cling film to create a textured look. This model make me think of another way that I could use plastic packaging or the texture of it to symbolise a ready meal.

This circular model using tissue paper and embroidery thread was me making a shape and seeing how the texture and the shape could be seen. I liked the creases in the tissue paper and I liked the contrast of the pink against the blue. Although I'm not sure if this shape could be used I would quite like to see if holes could be used in anyway within my piece and this might be something I'll experiment with in my sketches. Could holes be used to represent the holes in a salt shaker?

In these models I continued to work with circular forms because when I think about children's nutrition I think about the healthy eating wheel that we are taught as children. The model on the left takes inspiration from this wheel but is rearranged to represent an unbalanced meal. The model on the right is made up of green and red beads to represent the high levels of salt and sugar and fat in a meal and the vegetables and carbohydrates in a meal but in a more abstract way. The beads also reminded me of grains of salt and sugar - this made me think of maybe using these size of beads to be a way of showing salt and sugar in my final piece.
I wanted to take a video of the beads in the circle moving around and see if they moved in a certain way and if I could use this in any way for my final piece. I didn't think that the beads or the use of beads could really be used in my final piece because although they could be a good way of showing the salt and sugars i in a child's ready meal I didn't think that the movement of beads could add anything to a potential final piece.

I wanted to use a different shape that wasn't a circle so I used cut up hexagons from a sweet packet and used these to create a molecule like model that used that represented the traffic light system in a different way, I used paint to create a mix of red orange and green surrounding a green hexagon. I also used a glue gun to stick down these cardboard shapes and ended up creating a these web accidentally inside these hexagons. I quite liked these because I felt like these could represent sugar or the bad parts that make up a ready meal or even the plastic packaging in a ready meal which is an idea I had been exploring in previous models.
